Why Don’t We formed in Los Angeles in 2016, and have been taking the music world by storm ever since. The young group is made up of Daniel Seavey, Zach Herron, Corbyn Besson, Jonah Marais, and Jack Avery.
With over 120 million streams to their name already, it’s obvious that this group is set for future stardom. The boys called TEARAWAY from backstage on their US tour to chat about their new single, their experiences in transitioning from solo artists to a five-man group, and touring down under.
Hi! How are you guys?
We’re good! Just got off stage in Dallas and it was quite a fun show. Living it up in Texas, baby!
We’re loving your latest single, Trust Fund Baby. Tell us about the track!
Jonah: Ed Sheeran actually wrote that song for us, so we weren’t involved in the writing process, but we do really love the meaning behind it. With the video we wanted to empower girls and let them know that they’re strong and they can do really cool stuff just like boys can.
You all started as solo artists in different areas of America. What’s it been like spending the past 18 months in a group? How did you get started in music?
Jack: It’s more fun. You have four other guys to back you up. When you get off stage you share the exact same moment where you’re all just super excited and happy. When you’re a solo artist, you just get off and you have no-one to talk to and no-one can relate to what you just did.
We all got started in different ways as solo artists. Some of us toured on our own and did stuff online. We all met online and met up in L.A to hang out. We didn’t plan on being a band which is why we named it Why Don’t We, and now we’re a band and it’s been the best time ever.
As you’ve mentioned earlier, Ed Sheeran wrote your new track, which is awesome. Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?
I mean, we all had talked about wanting to collab with Ed for a long time, so that was a big tick off the bucket list. Macklemore and Drake would be dope. Barack Obama…Morgan Freeman could do a little voice over on a part [laughs].
What’s your favourite song to perform live?
Daniel: Definitely Trust Fund Baby. It is nuts. Zach does this thing when he goes “scream it,” and they scream it! The fans know most of the songs but since that song is on the radio right now, that song seems to be the loudest. The crowd screams every word.
You’ve amassed over 1.6 million subscribers and over 172 million YouTube views on your channel. What’s been your favourite music video?
Definitely Trust Fund Baby. Even filming it, it was the most fun. Jason, the director, was amazing. The director of our video has directed videos for Ed Sheeran and Macklemore, so he has a really good repertoire.
You’ve achieved a lot in the past year and a half and have hundreds of millions of streams online. What’s been a highlight of the journey so far?
Jonah: Performing on the stage at Madison Square Garden was the biggest moment for me, and probably all of us. It was so surreal to look out and see 20,000 people at the world’s most famous venue. That was a huge goal for us- to play at Madison Square Garden- so that was cool.
Where in the world would you love to tour, or what’s an event that you would you love to perform at?
Daniel: I’m not just saying this cause you’re here, I’ve always really wanted to go to New Zealand.
I’ve heard the beaches in New Zealand are epic, so that’s one thing. Also it’s so beautiful. I’ve watched Lord of the Rings and I know a lot of that is filmed there, and it’s so beautiful so I got to go there.
You’ve amassed fans all over the world. Has there been any funny/weird fan experiences?
Our fans are actually not too weird-crazy, they’re good-crazy. They hang outside of the bus all the time. That’s new for us, having tonnes of people around our bus at all times. Their volume is maxed out at all times, and they have a habit of throwing underwear on stage when we’re performing. That’s new.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Jonah: Ed Sheeran is a big one so that was such a dream to be able to collaborate with him on Trust Fund Baby. We look up to Justin Bieber. We kind of grew up with him in a way and watched him in the limelight and how he’s handled everything, so that’s pretty inspirational.
Daniel: Jon Bellion, creatively. I really like that he likes to stay creative and do a lot of the stuff on his own as- especially in pop music- it’s hard to do things on your own.
What’s coming up next?
We’re on tour right now doing 40 dates in the US, and we have a couple of days off before going over to Europe. We’ve got to finish our album in all of that, so there’s a lot to do but [they’re] all great things we’ve dreamed of doing, so we are very happy and excited to show you what is coming. It’s all good stuff, but we’re busy!
