It’s no secret that this kiwi four-piece have been making serious musical waves overseas after a big NZ summer. They’ve performed in front of 50,000 at Western Springs for Six60’s massive show and supported both Camila Cabello and Christina Aguilera overseas. The group is soon to be settling back down on kiwi soil after touring Europe and releasing their new banger All This Time.
Drax has definitely come a long way since their days as music students busking on the streets. But as we caught up with the jet setting musicians to talk highlights, touring, the challenges of production, and their upcoming shows, we’re reminded that they’re just normal lads with incredible talent.
The boys spoke about their hit single Woke Up Late and that while on Camilla’s tour, music executives shared the song with Hailee Steinfield and she heard it, liked it and asked to be on the track. “We freaked out and said yes, obviously!” The band first heard Hailee’s vocals “in our little studio in Wellington” and the remix threw the song back on the charts over a year after it was originally released – the rest was history.
Following having Hailee on a track, we chatted about future collaborations and the guys had a resounding answer of “our wish-list is so long! Chance the Rapper or Jaden would be sick, we love the idea of working with rappers.” Ariana Grande and SZA also feature on their list. The Woke Up Late remix also lead to a new music video (which is currently sitting at over 13 million views in just a few months) and internet personality Liza Koshy was on the top of their leading lady wish-list. “Liza also loved the song so it lined up so perfectly and she’s the sweetest person in the world.”
Fresh off the Christina Aguilera The X Tour’s European leg, the group can’t wait to perform in Auckland and Christchurch over the next few weeks. The crowds are in for a real treat, “we’re going to be playing all the music from the album plus some others.” They’re also excited to perform their new tune All This Time as it’s “one of our favourites to play at the moment just because we get so pumped up and jump around.”
“We’ve been so lucky to be on some amazing tours. It’s hard to pinpoint a particular show because they’ve all been amazing! We’re just so grateful to be able to see the world while playing music.” Confirming that the boys have had some crazy amazing experiences, Coachella is in their sights after they attended the most recent festival and “left pretty inspired.”
The group draws on their crowd’s reaction to their new music to influence their writing process. You can see that as they’ve been playing their new single All This Time live prior to releasing it as a fully produced studio track. Drax has also stripped their sounds back, releasing an acoustic version of their NOON EP, including tunes like Toto. “Recording acoustic is a lot different in the way that is more exposing – you can’t hide behind big production so you have to make sure the performance is spot on!”
I bet you’re also wondering what could be next on the agenda for Drax… “If we can continue doing what we’re doing, playing more shows and writing more music while getting to experience some amazing parts of the world – we’ll be pretty happy!”
Drax Project are fresh off the stages in Europe and on their way home to perform to packed crowds in Auckland (27th July) and Christchurch (4th August) – there is a seriously low handful of tickets left so catch Shaan, Matt, Sam and Ben while you can!
From tour managing boybands to working massive events and interviewing international talent, HAZEL REID is in love with the craziness that is the entertainment industry.
