It was an absolutely massive weekend for Smokefreerockquest 2016 with regional finals in Whanganui, Otago, Timaru, North Shore and Auckland Central; along with heats in Wellington and the Manawatu.

Psychedelic funk band, Why Vibrations from Wanganui High School took out the Whanganui regional final in front of a crowd of 150 at Opera House on Saturday night.

Te Paerata Tichbon (electric guitar and vocals) and Michael Peterson (drums) make up the dynamic two piece. Peterson feels that they are in sync with each other when performing.

“We have a mind connection,” he says. “You know when you’re jamming and it all just feels right, like we just both know exactly when to build up and when each other are going to stop, it’s awesome.”

In the solo duo section Briana Allan placed first.

It was the singer-songwriter’s third time in Smokefreerockquest, but first time making it to a final.

Over in Otago, Six Years took out the regional final.

Members of the band have all played in Rockquest several times but lead vocalist Bill Caldwell says it is the first time they have been awarded a place.

“We used to have a pretty heavy sound but we toned it down this year,” he said, “We also changed our genre a bit and I think it was the shift in musical direction that worked out for us.”

Up on the North Shore Flintwater Express took out the band title, while the Auckland Central winners were indie pop four piece Daffodils from Western Springs College and Kristin School.

Songer songwriter Iris Guevarra from Avondale College took out the solo duo title for North Shore and Auckland Central. She says growing up in Auckland’s Filipino community, Karaoke was a big part of her childhood and led to her ambition to make music her career.

“There’s a photo of me when I was one with a mic in my hand,” she says. “I’ve got happy feet on stage – I just can’t stand still.”

While Two Imbue from Alfriston College placed first in the Maukau and West Auckland solo duo category.

Travelling back down south to Timaru Pseudo Sane from Geraldine High School took out the band title, while Caitlin Bradley from Roncalli College took out the solo duo section.

The singer-songwriter says she has her favourite Kiwi music idols to thank for her success.

“Music was always my forte growing up. When I was younger I used to listen to Jamie McDell, and I talked to her when she came down to Timaru – she kind of inspired me to start writing.”

Jason Kerrison (former Opshop frontman) has also been an inspiration for Caitlin, and encouraged her to try using a loop pedal.
