Hit tween show The Next Step is coming live to the ASB Theatre in Auckland as part of its Wild Rhythm tour. Ahead of the big night on 28 September, we caught up with two of the stars, Trevor Tordjman (James) and Jordan Clark (Giselle) to ask them about the show, dancing, acting and following your passion!
What has it been like starring on the global hit TV show The Next Step?
TREVOR: The experience of starring on The Next Step has changed my life. It has given me the confidence to follow my dreams!
JORDAN: We didn’t know that it was going to be like this. I feel very fortunate to be a part of this amazing family and I think we are so lucky that so many kids connect to it. It has been a life-changing experience and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
How did you become emerged in the world of dance? When did you start?
TREVOR: My mother owns a dance studio in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada – the city I grew up in. She introduced me to dancing at a very young age and ever since then, it has been my passion to perform.
JORDAN: I wanted to be a gymnast, but where I grew up there is no gymnastics, so my mom put me in acrobatics. From there I ended up learning a lot of different dance styles and just completely fell in love with it. I believe I was eight years old when I decided that I wanted to be a performer. I didn’t know if it was dancing, singing or acting, I just knew I wanted to perform. I was either five or six years old when I started.
What is your favourite thing about being involved in The Next Step?
TREVOR: This is such a hard question for me, because I love everything about being involved in The Next Step! Although, the inspiring people that I have met through the process takes the win for my favourite thing. Through working on the show, I have been involved in so many other things because of the people I’ve met from it.
JORDAN: My favourite part about being on The Next Step is that I feel like we are inspiring kids to go after their dreams. That is hands-down the coolest job ever, right!?!?
Do you have a favourite moment or episode?
TREVOR: I always loved filming the final competitions. Performing on stage has always been a passion of mine, and that’s what we got to do!
JORDAN: Hmm, that’s hard. I love a lot of episodes. I think my favourite one that I did, though, was in Season 3, when I’m auditioning for A-Troupe and Daniel and I get into a face-off. I liked that Giselle stuck up for herself and it felt for the first time that she knew exactly what was going on and what she needed to do.
What can The Next Step fans expect from your shows in New Zealand?
TREVOR: The Next Step fans can expect an amazing dance show that is full of fun interactions with the cast. If you love The Next Step, you will love this show. I’m PUMPED!
JORDAN: The cool thing about our show is that it has something for everybody. I think, for our fans, you actually get to see and get a sense of who we are as people instead of our character, which is pretty cool. A lot of our fans don’t believe that we do all our own tricks, so it’s always super awesome to see us dance live. Plus, we have the best time! I know all of us can’t wait to meet everyone. Even if you have never watched the show before, you would seriously enjoy this one.
You both choreographed this huge tour’s performances – what inspires you?
TREVOR: Touring the world definitely inspires me! The fact that we get to perform in places like New Zealand is a dream come true for all of us. Other than that, choreographing and experiencing it with my Next Step family is always inspiring. They are all insanely amazing, creative performers.
JORDAN: For me, I love to challenge myself and I constantly want to be better and better, so that really pushes me. Also, just life situations in general are super inspiring. I love telling stories through movement and I’m so thankful we have this outlet to do so.
Have either of you been to New Zealand? Is there anything you want to do while you’re down here?
TREVOR: I have never been to New Zealand. Definitely want to see as much of the country as I can… I’ve heard it is beautiful.
JORDAN: I have never been to New Zealand. I’m not really sure to expect! I heard it is extremely beautiful, so I can’t wait to explore. If anyone has any suggestions, make sure to tweet at us and let us know what we should do and check out!
What’s the best piece of life advice you’ve ever received?
TREVOR: Follow your passion.
JORDAN: Growth is so important. Keep expanding your mind.
Speaking of life advice, is there any advice you’d give to young people wanting to get into the industry?
TREVOR: Follow your passion… haha! But actually, if being in the entertainment industry is truly what you love to do, then do it. As tough as it can be, if you love it, you will be successful.
JORDAN: Confidence is key. Believe in yourself and push yourself to the maximum. I believe anything is possible; you just have to put the time and effort into it. Also, follow your heart.
What’s coming up next for you?
TREVOR: I definitely want to get more into acting – but don’t worry, I’ll keep dancing too! The Next Step gave me a taste of how awesome it can be to get a role that you really love, and I want to do more of that in the future.
JORDAN: After the tour I am hoping to go back to Los Angeles and start auditioning out there. I want to put all my time and effort into acting. I want to be the best that I can be, so I have lots of work ahead. I can’t wait!
