Trevor Moran, a 17-year-old YouTube sensation from the USA is hitting our shores later this month, on the Amplify Live tour. We called him to have a chat about inspirations, his favourite collaborations and how excited he is to come to New Zealand for the first time.
You have just released your second EP, Alive and we’re loving Got Me Feelin’ Like. What inspires your music?
Honestly, what I’m feeling in the moment, for sure. I’ll collaborate with the producer and the writer about my current emotions and it will balloon into something else.
Where did you discover your passion for music?
After watching all the awards shows, seeing all the pop-stars, I said to myself: ‘This is where I want to be’, and I went to a vocal coach who told me I was pretty good. After years and years of singing, I became a trained singer and I’m now a trained performer. It’s the best feeling performing live and having a whole set – entertaining is my favourite thing to do.
What’s your favourite process of music – is it performing live, recording the music…?
Well I hate recording it because it takes so long. The producers expect so much and are always asking for another take. I say to them: ‘I just did the same damn thing already!’ My favourite thing is making music videos. My new favourite one is Got Me Feelin’ Like.
Do you have creative control with your music videos?
I do. I go in with my director and we plan what we want to do and we make it happen. I have creative control over most things I do, it’s one of the perks of being an independent artist.
Let’s get real – you have over 4.3 million social media followers, that’s a pretty big army. Not to mention over 45 million channel views on YouTube. Did you ever see yourself being on the internet for your job and being this successful?
I didn’t ever expect it to turn into this. I started off a YouTube channel when I was 8 years old and it was crazy. I would be on my dad’s computer and turn on the webcam and do videos. I created my new channel and I wanted people to see the real me and they loved it.
You regularly collaborate with some of YouTube’s best, including Ricky Dillon, Shane Dawson, Jenna Marbles, as well as two fellow Amplify Live 2016 attendees Kian and JC. Do you have a favourite collaboration and is there anyone you would love to work with?
My favourite one is with Shane Dawson, where we did our own carpool karaoke. I would love to collaborate with any of the fellow Amplify Live talent.
What’s one song you wish you’d written?
Chandelier by Sia. I also love Hands to Myself by Selena Gomez.
What’s your favourite song to perform?
Favourite song of mine to perform is Got Me Feelin’ Like – it’s the new single, it’s really groovy and I can get down to it.
You’re heading to New Zealand as part of the Amplify Live tour – what can we expect from your set?
You can expect crazy dancing, a new mix and it’s an elevated version of me. I am trying to stand out and do my own thing. My ultimate goal is to entertain people. I’m excited to see and meet everyone there.
Have you been to New Zealand before? Is there anything you want to do?
I’ve never been to New Zealand. I’m so excited to come over and travel. I want to do the bungy. I want to see if I can find time in my schedule to do that.
Best piece of life advice you’ve ever received?
I can’t quote it word for word but along the lines of: ‘you need to worry about yourself, don’t focus on other people too much.’
Speaking of life advice, is there any advice you’d give to young people wanting to get into the industry?
Don’t try to be anyone else. It’s not going to work if you’re copying someone else. Celebrate your inner self and people will love you for you.
You’ve just released your new single and are on your way to spend this month with Amplify Live. What’s coming up next for you following that?
I’m going to go home and sleep for 10 years. I’ve had the busiest past few months of my life. I’ve just finished my own headline tour, I’ve been creating the music video and doing press.
You can catch Trevor Moran alongside other YouTubers such as Tyler Oakley, Kian & JC, Jamie’s World and Andrea Russett at Amplify Live in Auckland and Wellington this April.
Trevor’s EP is out now, featuring new tune Got Me Feelin’ Like. Make sure you subscribe to his channel for more awesome video collaborations!SHARE THIS POST...
