After touching down on our shores in support of Khalid’s sold out show last year, Ruel made sure he added Auckland (and Wellington) to his world tour, where he’s just finished a successful run in Australia and his next stops include London and Paris.
Australian singer-songwriter Dylan Joel performed a solo set with his loop pedal, which gave some Ed Sheeran vibes. He got the crowd singing with his cover medley of Dua Lipa’s New Rules, Khalid’s Location and even No Scrubs by TLC.
Near the end of his 30-minute set, he had a bit of technical difficulty which meant that he had to strip back to just his guitar (no loop pedal) and said, “the show continues”, the crowd didn’t seem to mind and cheered even louder.
After a short intermission, the crowd was more hyped up than ever, chanting “Ruel, Ruel, Ruel” as his band members and technicians finalised the set-up. As his band took the stage, playing the chords to his introduction, screams ensued as the 15-year-old Australian-based, London-born musician hit the stage. Ruel begun with a tune straight from his EP – Golden Years with his support act (and pal) Dylan Joel joining him on-stage to perform Not Thinkin’ Bout You.
There was one thing I quickly learned and it was that Ruel really knows how to put on a show. The Tuning Fork may be an intimate venue, dubbed ‘Spark Arena’s little gig’ but you wouldn’t have known it as he jumped and glided all over the stage, singing along to the cheering fans from the front row to the back row.
The sold-out show’s audience was also treated to a couple of covers including Billie Eilish’s Bellyache and Who Did That To You? by John Legend. And just like that, the evening came to a close with a (much requested) encore of Younger, which ended in Ruel thanking the crowd and then sticking around to meet all of his fans for photos, like the good lad he is.
Ruel’s had a massive last twelve months, opening for Khalid, playing at the big Summer Sonic Festival in Tokyo alongside the likes of Shawn Mendes, Marshmello and Chance The Rapper + releasing his Ready EP, and I have a feeling this is just the beginning for the young musician, Ready is out now on all platforms.
