Against the Current are a pop-rock band hailing from New York. The American band was formed in 2011 and its touring members include vocalist Chrissy Constanza, drummer Will Ferri and guitarist Dan Gow.

We called lead singer Christina for a chat about coming to NZ, her inspiration, and Against the Current which she calls “dynamic, energetic, silly and fun.”

Hi Christina! We hear you’re on tour in the USA currently and are getting ready for a show?

Yeah, we’re in California today and playing a show tonight. I’m just chilling a couple of hours before we go on.

You’ve been together for a couple of years now – what do you love about making music?

No-one has asked us that, which is kind of weird, so I’ve never really thought about it. For me, music is everything; it’s still my outlet. It’s my experiences and thoughts and emotions. It’s still that for me, that’s my favourite thing about it.

The fans connect to it as well and we kind of all feel a little bit more comfortable in the familiarity.

Where do you take inspiration from?

We definitely like to keep it genuine, so like to write about what we’re experiencing and what we’re feeling. Also what we’re seeing around us – sometimes we write about experiences that aren’t our own, but we watch other people experience it.

What’s it like being the only girl in the band?

It’s kind of normal at this point; I only know what it’s like to be a girl in a band.

What’s your favourite song to perform?

I love playing Wasteland. It was one of my favourite songs off the record already, I love performing and I feel very ‘myself’ performing that song.

You’re coming down under this October with your In Our Bones world tour – what can Kiwis expect from your show?

We’re hoping to get people dancing and moving. It starts and ends with every person in the room.

Have you ever been to NZ? What do you know about us and what would you like to do while you’re here?

We know that Lord of the Rings was filmed there and would love to visit some of the places that they shot at. We’re really excited to have the whole tour experience down under for the first time.

What’s the song you wish you’d written?

I feel like not a lot of people have heard of this song – I Still Wonder by The Chain Gang of 1974. I just feel like it’s one of the coolest songs ever and I wish I could write a song like that.

Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?

I would love to work with the singer of One Republic, Ryan Tedder, who’s written with a lot of people so would love the opportunity to be in studio with him one day. I love [his] songwriting style.

What’s coming up next for you?

We’re going to be finishing up this tour and spend the summer finishing up the record. Hopefully [it] will be ready to go after we’ve toured in the autumn.

Against the Current’s only New Zealand show is on October 3rd at the Tuning Fork, Spark Arena in Auckland. Tickets are now available from
