As the weather continues to heat up, the event calendar across the country is filled to the brim with plenty of summer events to get amongst.
We’ve rounded up a few highlights including Pride Festival, the female-led Peachy Keen Festival, Netsky’s immersive experience, Armageddon Expo in Christchurch, local talent at the Fringe Festival and L.A.B hosting a homegrown line-up at Mt Smart Stadium.
Celebrate the wonderful LGBTQI+ community with Pride Month events across the Auckland region. There is plenty on offer with many opportunities to support local talent including the samesame but different literary festival, interacting with Atamira Dance Company at the Auckland Art Gallery and the Ending HIV Big Gay Out at Coyle Park on the 14th that has Half.Queen, Paige, Theia, Possum & Maude, COVEN, Chelsea Jade and House of Drag winner Spankie Jackson on the line-up. The Cookie Project
Free cookies… yes you read that right but these aren’t just any free cookies, they’re created by the amazing people behind The Cookie Project in their awesome kitchen space at Eden Park. The Cookie Project gives Kiwis with disabilities the opportunity to be employed at their social enterprise with the purpose of making delicious cookies! Check out their work at Eden Park each Saturday in February from 11am – 1pm. All details on their website.
Peachy Keen Festival
Do you want to see a round up of female-led musical acts on a festival that was founded by women? Yes, yes you do. Peachy Keen Festival is taking over Basin Reserve in Wellington on April 3rd for a stellar line-up including Gin Wigmore, Paige, Benee, Foley, The Beths, Ladyhawke, Stellar* and Ladi6. The all ages event is one not to be missed, tickets are on sale now from Just The Ticket.
Netsky’s Glasshouse Tour
Honorary Kiwi Netsky spent his New Years with us here in New Zealand and has stuck around to continue the party by taking his ‘immersive experience’ on the road to give local fans a show to remember in Napier, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin across February – for all of the tour details click here.
Auckland Fringe Festival
Auckland Fringe, which was dubbed as a “wonderful little artistic hurricane” by a previous attendee, has plenty of shows on offer for 2021. From theatre to dance to comedy to performance art, film, spoken word, music and everything in between, there is sure to be something for everyone! Check out the shows running here (programme runs from the 14th of February and 6th March) and support your local creatives!
Hamilton Arts Festival
Later this month (20th to 28th February) Hamilton Garden Arts Festival will host an array of local creatives during a week-long event programme. Catch special one-off shows in the Waikato region from kiwi talent including Chelsea Jade, comedian Ben Hurley, Tami Neilson & Friends, Ria Hall, Julia Deans, and singers from the NZ Opera – the full programme available on their website.
The team at Armageddon are kicking their 2021 events off in Christchurch on March 6th and 7th at Christchurch Arena. Due to the ongoing pandemic, they are hosting a variety of virtual guests for epic panels alongside their usual line-up of gaming displays, cosplay events, Christchurch brick show, and all things collectables. Attendees will get the chance to be involved in exclusive chats with virtual celebrities including Batwoman’s Rachel Skarsten, Camrus Johnson and Nicole Kang, The Mandalorian’s Giancarlo Esposito and Supergirl’s Jesse Rath and Nicole Maines. Fun in Auckland Central
The Auckland CBD has loads on offer this summer including the annual Auckland Lantern Festival where visitors will find hundreds of handmade Chinese lanterns plus food, drink and music across four days (25th to 28th February) at the Captain Cook Wharf downtown. Latin Fiesta will be rolling into Aotea Square from the 19th to 21st with a taste of Latin America culture on offer in the form of music, dancing and traditional market food. Also mark March 13th in your calendar as Cross Street Music Festival, dubbed a ‘lane-way bloc style party’ returns for its third year with the likes of homegrown talents Wax Chattels, Na Noise, Mini Simmons and Vanessa Worm – tickets are available from the Ticket Fairy now.
Music and Movies in Parks
Looking for a free activity to fill your day or night this Summer? Music in Parks and Movies in Parks return with their 2021 programme featuring entertainment at a variety of parks across the Auckland region. Captain Marvel, Jumanji: The Next Level and Take Home Pay will be on the big screen and the music programme includes Ekko Park, Jordan Luck Band, Raiza Biza and Three Houses Down across multiple weekends in February and March.
L.A.B are taking the stage at Mt Smart Stadium’s Upper Field on the 27th of March for a special headline show that will be sure to have their fans In The Air. The group will be joined by Mako Road, Ladi6, Ria Hall and The Leers for a homegrown show to remember. It’s the only chance for locals to catch L.A.B in their one Upper North Island appearance this summer, that will showcase music from their three albums plus new material in a two hour set. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.
