Doja Cat – Vegas
New music from Doja Cat is always a treat, but even more so given how conflicted she’s
seemed about continuing in music recently. Thankfully, Vegas is one of her best releases.
Featuring in the upcoming Elvis Presley biopic, the single is a biting kiss-off to a scorned
lover, built around a sample of Big Mama Thornton’s Hound Dog. With Doja’s classic cheeky
delivery and melodic blend of pop and rap, it’s a surefire hit you’ll want to be first to hear.
MCK – Paragraphs
Paragraphs is a deeply self-reflective, vulnerable moment from pop princess MCK. Her
angelic vocals over a soothing guitar-based beat find her sharing incredibly honest lyrics,
expressing the difficulty of knowing how to act in a new relationship. For those who suffer
from “risky text anxiety”, Paragraphs will be a comfort in itself, as MCK’s material is almost
unsettlingly relatable, and offers a lot of promise for her upcoming debut album Becoming.
Emma Dilemma – Temporary You
Emma Dilemma is one of New Zealand’s most exciting current artists, with an indescribable
ear for catchy pop melodies and highly produced rock grit. Temporary You finds her on a
distorted, “bubblegum rock” love song, honing in on her tight rhyming ability and trademark
sass. It’s an excellent lead-up to her upcoming album SPIT. Fans of Paramore and Willow
should run, not walk, to stream this banger of a tune.
Carly Rae Jepsen – Western Wind
For synth pop’s most beloved niche artist, Carly Rae Jepsen’s new single Western Wind is a
big step back in production complexity. It’s a relaxing, luscious song devoted to Californian
summers, a glimpse into what Lorde’s Solar Power might have been with more sonic detail.
Jepsen’s soothing layered vocals fill the track and make it especially pleasing to listen to with
a good pair of headphones, and the electric guitar in the bridge is absolutely stunning. Even
though winter may be sweeping in for us New Zealanders, Western Wind can be a brief
escape back into that now long-gone summer bliss.
Saski – Golden Hours
Aotearoa’s electric indie-pop artist Saski has just dropped her stunning debut EP Golden Hours, out today. Joining the dreamy collection of songs is new single Never Give You Up, a delicately uplifting song of reassurance, layered in expansive electric guitars.FOLLOW US...
