This is the third time Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have played in New Zealand. This time  they were at Vector Arena, which was perfect for artists of their caliber.

I say “their” talent; I feel Lewis goes largely unnoticed compare to Macklemore. This would be due to the fact that Macklemore does the rapping, but Lewis holds it all together with the music.

However, the show that these two put on was absolutely incredible – and this is coming from someone who isn’t a die-hard fan of them.

This was my first time seeing them live, so I had no idea what to expect. They played almost every song of theirs that has been on the radio in the last three years, so that was a bonus for those audience members who only knew those songs.

What was awesome was the #BlackLivesMatter tribute the pair did, as well as a tribute to Prince, which was really good.

What surprised me was the amount of interaction Macklemore had with the crowd. In between each song he would tell a story or say how much he loved New Zealand. He told a really touching story about taking his baby daughter downtown in Auckland to look in the shops… Now, she hadn’t said her first words yet, but yesterday, in Auckland, she said them: They were ‘thrift shop’… and then the guys played their hit song Thrift Shop and the crowd went mental.

The coolest thing and most crazy part of the gig was that during one of the songs, Macklemore gave cookies out to the crowd. When the song finished, he felt bad that the people in the back row wouldn’t have got one, so he tried to break a world record and he threw a cookie to the back of the stadium – and someone caught it.

The performance was amazing. They had the crowd in the palms of their hands; everyone knew the words to every song. An outstanding gig.

Christchurch fans can check out Macklemore & Ryan Lewis at the Horncastle Arena on July 30. There are still tickets available!
