I was excited to see what London-based YouTubers Joe Sugg and Caspar Lee had in store for their live show, after seeing their prank and challenge videos online.
Joe and Caspar’s first show in New Zealand was met with a screaming crowd at Auckland’s ASB Theatre. The host, Australian TV presenter Scott Tweedie kept the games and laughs flowing from the get-go.
The duo brought their upcoming second film, Joe and Caspar: Hit The Road USA, to life during the 90-minute performance. Exclusive never-before-seen clips from the movie were broadcasted through the venue that had real-life challenges following.
Carrying out an epic lip sync battle inspired by their time as Gospel singers, Caspar galloped across the stage to Gangnam Style and Joe paid tribute to Lorde’s hometown with Royals. The boys showed the crowd that they were serious competitors, taking part in a live version of the Brain Freeze challenge. After having to answer American trivia in ice baths, it was time for the interval.
Getting back into nice dry clothes, Joe and Caspar were welcomed back onstage to huge cheers – which really erupted when Joe took off his shirt to reveal he was wearing an All Blacks jersey underneath. (Nice earning of brownie points with the Kiwis, Joe!)
While they might have only had a day being cowboys while filming HTR: USA, Joe and Caspar thought they’d have a crack at live lassoing. A cardboard cut-out of fellow YouTuber Oli White was the practice target. The challenges were not over yet, with the “I Don’t Think You’re Ready for This Jelly” segment, which involved three excited members from the crowd. In true Joe Sugg style, there was a shocking machine included, just for the laughs. Let’s just say, there was jelly flying everywhere.
The show’s last segment was an exclusive Q&A session with Joe and Caspar, where a few lucky audience members got to ask their favourite YouTubers their burning questions. Scott had already pre-warned the crowd that it wasn’t the time or place for marriage proposals (sorry ladies).
It wouldn’t be a competition without a forfeit… The night’s winner, Joe rocked a king’s crown and cape while Caspar drew the short straw and chucked on a hot dog suit.
This show kept us on the edge of our seats, wondering what the boys were going to pull out of the bag next. It was a fantastic performance from two very talented YouTubers.
The blooper reel that played out as the show finished made us excited for the upcoming Hit The Road USA film.
Joe & Caspar: Hit The Road USA is out on DVD on November 21st.
