New Zealand Music Month – Te Marama Puoro O Aotearoa is in full swing and this year’s theme Level Up is a great reason to get out there and support local up-and-coming talent. We’ve put together a few of our highlights for the month including a special livestream this week and a few NZ music celebration events – for a full list of NZ Music Month nationwide gigs, you can check out their website.

Waiata Reo Māori Live

A special showcase is heading our way for NZ Music Month that will have Waiata Reo Māori songwriters and performers taking to the stage. The stacked lineup features Anna Coddington, Kings, Hina, Georgia Lines, Huia, Mohi, Rei, Chad Chambers, Hāni Dread and Louis Baker. You can catch the livestream on the 19th from 7pm via Waiata Anthem’s YouTube channel.

NZ Music Shirt Day is back!

Music Shirt Day is back this NZ Music Month and is in support of charity MusicHelps, who have assisted over 70,000 people in the local music community with financial services, mental health and counselling. You can get amongst this day from anywhere in the country so this Friday 28th grab your favourite local musician’s merchandise and text MUSIC to 2448 to donate $3 instantly to MusicHelps to help them continue to do the great mahi in our music industry.

NZ Music Month Summit

This summit is a favourite on the NZ Music Month calendar each year that features a stacked line-up of a variety of professionals from different corners of the industry including artist managers, radio music directors, touring musicians and Soundcheck Aotearoa. Tickets to the summit are free (from Moshtix) and even if you’re not able to head to The Tuning Fork in Auckland, you can just as easily jump online to get amongst the day.

The NZ Music Month Wrap Party

Ain’t no party like a wrap party! Head along to The Tuning Fork in Auckland on 31st a.k.a the last official day of NZ Music Month for 2022. It may be a Tuesday night but the tunes will be flowing with a mega performance schedule featuring Kings, Jeremy Redmore, Goodshirt (Rodney & Gareth), AVYA, Isla Noon, Ashy, Mazbou Q, Nic Manders, Benjamin Mack, YAHYAH, Pharaoh Swami, Lips, Borderline and Jupita, hosted by Keith Turner. This epic celebration event will also have all proceeds donated to MusicHelps so it’s a win, win! Grab tickets via MoshTix.

Our Artists Picks

We’re also big fans of local music here at Tearaway, and in line with this year’s theme we thought we’d share a few of our up-and-coming artist picks. One of our Mavericks (Mavericks are our wonderful contributors btw!) Danica, who is also a talented local musician, wanted to shout out independent artist Mousey “she’s an incredibly emotional and interesting writer with a lot of genre range and I find her artistry so impressive.” I also love checking out up-and-coming talent – one musician that I’m excited to see what’s next from is ZExII who I was first introduced to through the Popstars television show last year. He’s got this groovy, easy to listen to vibe and his upcoming mixtape is due soon!
