Private Vegas is the ninth instalment of James Patterson’s Private series and is a book that will certainly keep you on edge.
The series focuses once again on Jack Morgan, a man who heads a private Investigation Company and a person that isn’t one to lead a simple life.
There are a number of antagonistic characters and unpleasant situations that Jack Morgan has to deal with; an uncle and a nephew who abuse their diplomatic immunity, a friend on trial, a dangerous twin brother coming back into Jack's life, a businessman who tries to kill one of his work colleagues, and a complicated romantic life. Jack Morgan certainly has his hands full.
When I first started reading the novel and became aware of all this, I couldn’t help but wonder if this would slow the story down or confuse the reader.
Private Vegas is the first book I have read from this series and while I did find myself frazzled at times with the on-going introduction of new characters – and the somewhat sporadic change in point of view – the story is easy to follow.
The authors’ writing style flows well and I was happy to see a lot of background information for readers who are perhaps picking up the ninth instalment instead of reading the first Private book, like me! After the first few chapters, I felt as though I now knew what to expect and I found myself becoming increasingly eager to know how each case would be solved and how some characters would get themselves out of scary situations.
For fans of the Private series, this book will not disappoint. I’d also recommend it for fans of Patterson’s other series and in general to people who love a good modern day thriller.
What’s even more thrilling about Private Vegas is that Patterson is now releasing downloadable copies that have a 24-hour timer which you can’t get rid of. What a way to make the experience feel more real – in a non-life threatening way, of course!
So, if you want a reading experience that embodies the thriller, crime-solving genre, this is the book to read, especially if you get the copy with a 24-hour timer!
