He’s “creative, adventurous, quiet – sometimes lol.” Introducing 20 year old Alvin Brown; skilled photographer, Insta-sensation, Potterhead and Hamiltonian.
What are you up to at the moment?
Serving a mission for the LDS church; photographer, graphic designer.
When did you realise that you wanted to pursue photography?
It all started with an iPhone back in 2014. I liked taking abstract photos of random things, places – and that just built from there.
Who or what are your inspirations?
Other photographers, Instagramers, creatives. YouTubers such as Louis Cole (FunForLouis), Ben Brown, DevinSupertramp.
How would you describe your relationship with the camera?
I can’t really be anywhere without it. Definitely has become a third arm!
To you, what makes a good photo?
In all honesty, I think if you as the creator see something that you see as “a good photo,” then who am I to judge? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
If you had to choose, which of your photos is your favourite, and why?
Now that is hard. But if I’m going to be honest, it’s the very first photo I posted on Instagram. It’s a photo of a surfer at the beach at about six in the morning, just as the sun came up. It was at that point I realised my passion.
You have over 9,000 followers on Instagram (that’s awesome)! What’s it like to be an Instagram sensation?
I’ve never really seen myself as an “Instagram sensation.” To be honest, I still see myself as an amateur… learning the ins and outs of photography. Yeah, the followers and likes are cool, but at the end of the day that’s all they are. What I love the most is being able to share my journey in life with people and communicate with them on an almost personal level. I guess having an audience as large as mine, you get to work with some really awesome brands as well. The whole Instagram community is just AWESOME!
What is the photography industry like?
I’m fairly new to the game but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s such an adventurous, creative, eye-opening world and one that I encourage anyone to pursue.
Why “explore authentic?”
When I first started Instagram, I wanted to have a name that would reflect my photography. And so, explore authentic it was! ‘Explore’ meaning to always be adventurous, step outside comfort zones and keep taking risks. ‘Authentic’ meaning to be true to who I am as a photographer, to show that honesty and ‘authentic-ness’ in my work.
If you could live inside in a film, what film would you choose to live in – and why?
I’m a bit of a Potterhead so the Harry Potter world would be awesome to live in. But also I’d love to live in the Marvel universe, I mean who wouldn’t?! Hulk SMASH! ???
What are your plans for the future?
Travel the world, keep creating online content and live life to the fullest!
What’s your most important piece of advice to hopeful young artists out there?
Be true to who YOU are. Find your own style, find your purpose. But most importantly, don’t ever take NO for an answer. Always stay humble, stay hungry!
